ILM Level 5 Diploma in Management Coaching and Mentoring
|
Increasingly, organisations are looking to experienced managers to support the development of less experienced staff through coaching and mentoring. This role frequently extends beyond the development of specific occupational skills into a wider programme of ongoing support. This support enables those being coached or mentored to identify their wider development needs, to clarify their career expectations and opportunities, and to open up possibilities for their personal growth, in terms of their relationships, attitudes, expectations and goals in their work and their wider lives.
Coaching, (which usually involves some learning and occupational skills development), and mentoring, (which usually involves developing self-awareness and insight), may be used as distinct strategies or they can be inter-linked. This award includes both approaches, and encourages the development of a wide range of appropriate knowledge and skills that can be applied according to coachees’ needs. It also aims to develop greater insight and self-awareness on the candidate’s part, to encourage their own personal growth as a necessary part of the learning process.
The Level 5 Diploma in Management Coaching and Mentoring aims to give managers the capability to coach others in their organisation and to be confident to act as a mentor who can develop people’s performance in their work roles and support them in their career development and personal growth.
Programme objectives
The main purpose of the qualification is to become highly effective as a Coach and Mentor. It provides a professional development route for managers or those with several years' experience in their role, as well as for those involved in people development.
The programme has two primary objectives:
to enable candidates to understand how coaching and mentoring can improve performance and support individuals to develop themselves and their careers
to develop the skills that candidates need to perform effectively as coaches and mentors
Where does the qualification lead?
The successful completion of the programme will entitle participants to gain a nationally recognised specialist vocational qualification, a Level 5 Diploma in Management Coaching and Mentoring, awarded by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). The ILM is a premier body with experience in the field of leadership & management in the UK and internationally.
Programme format and duration
The programme comprises 6 workshop days of guided learning.

Practice is the key
It is a condition to the successful completion of the programme that participants are able to put their skills into practice.
Coaching practice with real coachees will therefore be a second integral part of the qualification. A minimum of 12 hours of practical coaching activity will be conducted between and after the workshops, guided by tutorial support from the experienced Insight HRC workshop coach.
Finally Peer-coaching will further enhance relevant practical experience and provide additional support in regular face-to-face and/or telephone sessions alongside the coaching activities to foster personal learning and development.

Participants will be practising managers, HR professionals or Learning and Development specialists. They should normally have successfully completed a programme leading to the award of the ILM Level 3 Certificate or Introductory Certificate in First Line Management or an ILM Level 4 Diploma or Introductory Diploma in Management, or an equivalent qualification and have experience of working in a role at this level.
Candidates should normally also possess communication skills equivalent at least to Key Skill Level 3 in Communication or receive additional support to enable them to achieve this level in the course of the programme.
