Competencies may be described as:

“The attributes that an individual can bring to or develop in a job role that are directly related to standards of performance.”

Competencies describe the qualities (knowledge, skills, ability motivation and personality) required to excel in a particular role. They are sometimes described as the “common currency” of human resource management in that they can be used as the foundation for many different purposes.
