ILM Level 3 Certificate in Coaching for Team Leaders and First-line Managers

"The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be the only sustainable competitive advantage."

Organisations are increasingly realising the value of enhancing levels of empowerment amongst their staff. This involves providing individuals with the autonomy to find and act on their own solutions, without having to constantly refer issues back up to their supervisors. To achieve this, supervisors must change the way they support staff, from showing or telling them what to do, to helping them find their own ways of doing things. The best way of facilitating this is for supervisors to take a coaching approach, where they act as sounding boards for individuals’ thoughts about the best ways forward.

The coaching approach allows both the supervisor and the staff member to explore wider possibilities together, and also to develop deeper insight into issues that face the team, as well as heightened personal self-awareness. For the individual, the approach can have a positive impact on their day-to-day operation, and improve their levels of motivation as they are given the control to take on their challenges for themselves. In addition, the coaching intervention can also be focused on developing a clearer sense of what that person would like to achieve in the longer term, and of the process that will get them there.

The Level 3 Certificate in Coaching for Team Leaders and First-line Managers aims to give supervisors the capability to be meaningful sources of personal support to individual staff members. It also gives them a different way of seeing and approaching people management situations in general, and a range of tools and techniques that can be readily applied in any scenario.

Programme objectives
The main purpose of the qualification is to enable supervisors to become highly effective as Coaches for their own staff. It provides the first step in a professional development route for those who wish to acquire the means to empower and motivate their staff, and also to perhaps expand their scope, as Coaches for a greater variety of people, as they progress during their management careers.

The programme has two primary objectives:

  • To develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the team leader or FLM to appreciate the coaching role and the processes involved in that role.
  • to develop the skills needed to plan and work within a practical coaching interaction

    Where does the qualification lead?
The successful completion of the programme will entitle participants to gain a nationally recognised specialist vocational qualification: a Level 3 Certificate in Coaching for Team Leaders and FLMs, awarded by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). The ILM is a premier body with experience in the field of leadership & management in the UK and internationally.

    Programme format and duration
The programme comprises 4 workshop days of guided learning.

Workshop I (2 days): Coaching Skills for Team Leaders
This workshop will set the foundations for the supervisor’s role as a Coach and enable participants to:

  • Understand the role of coaching and its role in improving team members’ performance by unlocking potential, increasing problem solving skills, helping them to learn and helping them to achieve individual development goals
  • Understand the elements that build a good foundation for coaching and the barriers that can inhibit it
  • Develop understanding of coaching models and of the core skills required to conduct effective sessions, particularly listening, questioning and empathy

Workshop II (2 days): Building Effective Coaching Relationships
During the second workshop participants will have the opportunity to grow their individual profile as a Coach and:
  • Learn how to create the necessary, safe and confidential conditions for engaging in effective coaching 1-to-1s
  • Understand the role of personal beliefs and values, their source and effect on the coaching relationship
  • Understand how to orientate the coachee to specific goals

The participants will have the opportunity to practice essential skills in role-plays during which we use professional actors to ensure consistency and the highest levels of realism for the participants.

    Practice is the key
It is a condition to the successful completion of the programme that participants are able to put their skills into practice. Coaching practice with 2-3 real coachees will therefore be a second integral part of the qualification. A minimum of 6 hours of practical coaching activity will be conducted between and after the workshops, guided by tutorial support from the experienced Insight HRC workshop coach.

    Basic requirements
Participants will be practising team leaders or first-line managers. They should normally have successfully completed a programme leading to the award of the ILM Level 2 Certificate or Introductory Certificate in Team Leading or the ILM Level 3 Certificate or Introductory Certificate in First Line Management, or an equivalent qualification and have experience of working in a role at this level. Exceptionally, candidates who have no formal qualification in team leading or first line management, but who do have valuable experience and have completed some formal training in the role, may also participate.

Candidates should normally also possess communication skills equivalent to Key Skill Level 2 in Communication or receive additional support to enable them to achieve this level in the course of the programme.

    What are the benefits?
The programme surpasses the expectations of ordinary training. With its focus on constant practice and reflection it enables you to put advanced Coaching/Mentoring skills and new ways of thinking into practice from the first workshop. Our facilitators are experienced Coaching and Mentoring experts and bring leading-edge thinking, real-life case studies and anecdotes to each event.
