Our Brief
Seren was keen to develop an effective and fair system to identify, nurture and apply the skills of some of the most talented staff within the organisation. In addition to enhancing Seren's performance, the system had to provide a vehicle for retaining staff and readying them for progression into supervisory and management positions.
How we helped
Seren was keen to ensure that the process for identifying talent was overtly fair and effective. We, therefore, agreed to implement assessment & development centre processes that:
Were designed to measure the competencies that Seren needed in its managers of the future
Replicated real challenges within the organisation
Provided a realistic preview of the role of supervisors and managers
Combined self-assessment with objective measures of performance
Offered developmental feedback to all participants
We worked in partnership with Seren managers to define a comprehensive and pertinent competency framework and, subsequently to design job-relevant exercises including team briefings, performance management interviews, action group meetings and report writing. Every participant received a full feedback and action planning session from one of our team of business psychologists.
The most successful candidates entered onto a Fast Track Development Programme, comprising nine workshops and covering issues including:
Leadership
Influencing
Personal effectiveness
Problem-solving
Self confidence
Communication
Teambuilding
Creativity
The participants demonstrated the application of their learning through the completion of a work-based project.
We also supported this Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) accredited programme by offering Coaching Skills workshops to the line managers of each ‘fast tracker’.
The Results
The programme was deemed to be highly successful by the participants and senior managers. Some indications of the effectiveness of the programme include:
All participants achieved their ILM quality insignia award
All participants managed to secure permanent or acting-up positions at higher levels within the organisation
All participants rated the effectiveness of the programme as being at least four+ (on a scale up to five)
All participants and their managers were able to recognise significant growth in individual performance and skills
We are pleased that Seren has chosen to work again with Insight in the delivery of a second Fast tracking programme, which has attracted significant interest from staff within the organisation.
